When land stirs: Decoding the Batu Pahat tremor

ON the afternoon of Sept 22, 2026, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Batu Pahat, Johor. According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the tremor occurred at 4.55pm at a shallow depth of 10km, with its epicentre located roughly 27km south-west of Batu Pahat.

While no tsunami warning was required, the event was far from isolated. It followed two earlier, weaker tremors detected in the exact same maritime area on June 21 and Aug 25 in the same year, registering magnitudes of 3.3 and 3.1 respectively.

2026年9月22日下午，柔佛州峇株巴辖沿海发生4.4级地震。据马来西亚气象局（MetMalaysia）称，地震发生在下午4点55分，震源深度10公里，震中位于峇株巴辖西南约27公里处。

虽然无需发布海啸预警，但这并非孤立事件。此前，同年6月21日和8月25日，同一海域曾发生过两次震级分别为3.3级和3.1级的较弱地震。
