A chemical spill occurred on the South Klang Valley Expressway due to a failed locking barrier on a lorry transporting a 50% zinc oxide mixture.

The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department promptly responded, containing the spill, which extended 30 meters and into a drain, to prevent further spread.

The operation involved 12 personnel from local fire stations and the Hazmat team, ensuring the containment of the hazardous material.

SHAH ALAM, Oct 1 — The failure of a locking barrier on a lorry carrying a chemical mixture containing 50 per cent zinc oxide is believed to have caused a spill on the South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE) heading towards the West Coast Expressway (WCE) this morning.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Ashrul Riezal Asbar said the department was alerted to the incident at 8.07am before deploying personnel to the scene.

“The operations commander reported a chemical spill involving a 37-tonne lorry carrying 120 drums of a 50 per cent zinc oxide mixture, with each drum weighing 200 kilogrammes.

“The spill stretched for about 30 metres along the expressway and flowed into a drain. Firefighters took steps to contain the liquid waste in the drain to prevent it from flowing further and spreading,” he said in a statement today.

He said the operation involved 12 officers and personnel from the Teluk Panglima Garang Fire and Rescue Station, assisted by the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) team from the Shah Alam Fire and Rescue Station. — Bernama
