Religious affairs dept urges ‘solat hajat’, aid for residents after Serian haze emergency

Mosques and surau in Federal Territories are urged to hold special prayers for relief from haze affecting Serian, Sarawak.

A haze emergency was declared in Serian Division due to hazardous air pollution, supported by relevant authorities and His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister's Department emphasized the importance of community support and compliance with safety measures to assist affected residents.

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 5 — The Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) has called on mosques and surau in the Federal Territories to hold solat hajat (special prayers), seeking relief from the haze and protection for residents affected by worsening air pollution in Serian, Sarawak.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan said the department respected His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia’s consent to declare a haze emergency in the Serian Division following air pollution levels that posed a threat to public health and safety.

He also called on religious agencies and the public to support mitigation measures and welfare assistance for affected residents, in line with the principles of preserving life and mutual assistance.

“This critical situation calls for Islamic brotherhood and humanitarian values to be translated into concrete action through the swift delivery of assistance and full compliance with safety directives issued by the authorities.

“May this trial strengthen our tawakal and unity, as every effort to save lives is a noble religious trust in His sight,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Earlier, Sultan Ibrahim consented to the declaration of a haze emergency throughout the Serian Division after air pollution levels reached a stage deemed hazardous to public health and safety.

The Prime Minister’s Office said the decision was made after taking into account advice from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and relevant agencies on air quality in the area.

As of 4pm yesterday, Serian’s air quality remained at the hazardous level, with the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading at the Serian District Police Headquarters monitoring station reaching 514.

According to the Malaysian Air Pollutant Index Management System website, Kuching was also at the hazardous level with a reading of 313, while Samarahan and Sri Aman were at the very unhealthy level, recording 288 and 239 respectively. — Bernama

首相署（宗教事务）部长祖基菲里·哈桑博士表示，鉴于空气污染水平对公众健康和安全构成威胁，首相署尊重马来西亚最高元首苏丹易卜拉欣陛下宣布西连省进入雾霾紧急状态的同意。

他还呼吁宗教团体和公众本着保护生命和互助的原则，支持减灾措施和对受影响居民的福利援助。

“当前严峻形势要求将伊斯兰兄弟情谊和人道主义价值观转化为具体行动，迅速提供援助，并全面遵守当局发布的安全指令。

“愿这场考验增强我们的信仰和团结，因为在祂眼中，拯救生命的每一份努力都是一项崇高的宗教使命，”他昨天在一份声明中说。

此前，由于空气污染水平达到被认为对公众健康和安全构成危险的程度，苏丹易卜拉欣同意在西连省宣布进入雾霾紧急状态。

首相办公室表示，该决定是在考虑了首相拿督斯里安华·易卜拉欣、砂拉越州州长丹斯里阿邦佐哈里·敦·奥本以及相关机构就该地区空气质量提出的建议后做出的。

截至昨天下午 4 点，西连的空气质量仍处于危险水平，西连地区警察总部监测站的空气污染指数 (API) 读数达到 514。

根据马来西亚空气污染指数管理系统网站的数据，古晋的空气污染指数也达到了危险级别，读数为313；而三马拉汉和斯里阿曼的空气污染指数分别为288和239，处于非常不健康级别。——马新社
