Thailand is bracing for another dangerous spell of heavy rainfall just days after floods swamped Bangkok and other parts of the country. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered nationwide emergency preparations ahead of intense rain forecast from October 4. The wider severe weather alert runs through October 7, stretching from the North to the deep South. Bangkok and surrounding provinces are again directly in the risk zone while drainage and recovery operations continue. Governors have been ordered to ready emergency teams, machinery, evacuation centres, food and water. Meanwhile, officials are monitoring threats from flash floods, run-off, landslides, mudslides and strong winds as saturated areas face another severe weather test.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered nationwide preparations as Thailand braces for another spell of severe rainfall. The warning comes while Bangkok and other areas are still recovering from last week’s flooding.

Heavy rain is forecast across large parts of the country from October 4. Separately, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has extended its severe weather warning through October 7.

Bangkok and surrounding provinces are again inside the risk zone. The warning covers thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy to very heavy rainfall. In addition, officials are watching for flash floods, run-off, landslides, mudslides and accumulated water. The renewed threat arrives before existing flood recovery operations have finished.

Anutin orders nationwide emergency preparations as heavy rainfall threatens Thailand from October 4

Anutin, who is also Interior Minister, chaired another emergency command meeting on Friday morning. It was his third consecutive day leading the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command. The meeting began at 8 am at the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanpraphas attended alongside senior officials.

Defence Minister Lt Gen Adul Bunthamcharoen also joined the meeting. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt was present with armed forces commanders and officials handling flood operations. Provincial governors participated remotely as the government reviewed conditions nationwide. Notably, Anutin said coordinated operations had already improved conditions across affected areas.

Still, he warned officials against reducing their preparations. “We must be prepared because the weather conditions from now on are still unreliable,” Anutin said. Emergency resources could have to move rapidly if flooding develops elsewhere. The immediate concern centres on heavy rainfall forecast for October 4 and 5.

In response, Anutin ordered governors to complete preparations before conditions deteriorate. Personnel must remain available for immediate deployment. Machinery and emergency equipment must also be positioned for rapid use. Meanwhile, officials must prepare food, drinking water and other essential supplies.

Evacuation centres and supplies readied as Anutin demands one data set during the flood emergency

Temporary evacuation centres must be identified and made ready. Emergency response plans must also be prepared before the approaching rainfall. As part of this, local agencies must know where residents can be moved if evacuations become necessary. Supplies must already be available rather than assembled after flooding develops.

Anutin stressed that continuous preparedness was necessary because weather conditions remained unpredictable. “We must maintain continuous preparedness in case we need to deal with flooding situations in other provinces,” he said. Accordingly, resources committed to existing recovery operations cannot simply be stood down. Agencies must remain capable of moving personnel and equipment quickly.

On another front, Anutin demanded tighter control over information released during the emergency. He ordered government agencies to work from a single set of data. Different agencies must not release competing assessments of the same situation. “What I want to emphasise again is that we must use only one set of data,” Anutin said.

The order puts information coordination inside the wider emergency response. Government agencies must therefore coordinate their assessments before releasing them. Anutin said conflicting information could create confusion and unnecessary anxiety. In parallel, officials and residents need consistent information as weather and flood conditions change.

DDPM expands severe weather preparations as storms threaten provinces from the North to the deep South

Friday’s meeting also reviewed operations ordered during the previous meeting on October 1. Anutin said agencies had continued carrying out their assigned tasks. Operational teams had been established to support relief work in affected areas. Furthermore, officials reported problems encountered during field operations and requests for additional assistance.

Those reports are feeding into revised operational plans. Agencies were instructed to adjust their response as conditions changed. Anutin said cooperation between agencies had helped improve the current flood situation. Yet the latest forecast threatens another round of disruption before recovery work is complete.

The DDPM has now ordered preparations for severe weather between October 4 and 7. Director-General Nirat Pongsitthithavorn said volatile conditions were expected across much of Thailand. The forecast includes thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy to very heavy rainfall. Consequently, dozens of provinces have been told to intensify monitoring and emergency preparations.

The warning stretches from northern Thailand to the southern border provinces. All 17 northern provinces listed by the DDPM face possible severe weather. They include Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Phrae and Nan. Uttaradit, Tak, Sukhothai and Kamphaeng Phet are also covered.

Bangkok and eastern provinces face renewed rainfall as severe weather warning spreads across Thailand

Further south, the northern warning includes Phitsanulok, Phichit, Phetchabun, Nakhon Sawan and Uthai Thani. Officials must closely watch locations receiving prolonged or accumulated rainfall. Further downpours could produce flash flooding and rapid run-off. Saturated ground also raises the danger of landslides and mudslides in vulnerable areas.

The warning also extends across 20 northeastern provinces. They include Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Khon Kaen and Nakhon Phanom. Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, Surin, Sisaket and Ubon Ratchathani are also among the threatened provinces. Elsewhere, other northeastern areas are covered by the nationwide preparations.

Across central and western Thailand, another 26 provinces face severe weather risks. They include Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Suphanburi, Chainat, Singburi and Ang Thong. Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Lopburi, Saraburi, Nakhon Nayok and Prachinburi are also listed. At the same time, the warning extends towards the eastern seaboard.

Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat are among the eastern provinces covered. Crucially, Bangkok and its surrounding provinces are also included. Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi and Nakhon Pathom face the renewed threat. Samut Sakhon, Samut Prakan and Samut Songkhram are also inside the warning area.

Bangkok recovery overlaps new rain threat as southern provinces also brace for severe weather conditions

For Bangkok, the timing is particularly difficult. The capital remains engaged in recovery and drainage operations following the previous flooding. Now, officials must continue that work while preparing for another period of heavy rainfall. Neighbouring provinces face the same overlapping demands on personnel and equipment.

The warning also reaches deep into southern Thailand. The DDPM has placed 14 southern provinces under the severe weather alert. These include Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung and Songkhla. Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat are covered as well.

Along the Andaman coast, Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun face the same warning. Taken together, the alert stretches from Thailand’s northern border to the far South. It covers the Central Plains, Bangkok, the eastern seaboard and both sides of the southern peninsula.

Against that backdrop, the Central Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command has ordered intensified monitoring nationwide. Provinces must closely track rainfall and conditions in vulnerable areas. In particular, officials must watch locations already experiencing prolonged or accumulated rainfall. Those areas could face rapid changes if another intense downpour arrives.

Flash floods, landslides and strong winds drive round-the-clock monitoring across vulnerable communities

Flash flooding is one major concern. Run-off from higher ground presents another. Similarly, saturated slopes face risks from landslides and mudslides. Low-lying communities could experience accumulated water, while strong winds could accompany thunderstorms.

For that reason, monitoring teams have been instructed to operate around the clock. Provincial administrations must provide advance warnings to districts and local administrative organisations. High-risk communities must also receive warnings before conditions deteriorate. Where necessary, local agencies must be ready to support evacuations.

Emergency shelters form another part of the preparations. They must have enough capacity if residents are forced from their homes. Moreover, food, drinking water and other necessities must be available. Emergency equipment must also be prepared before conditions worsen.

The orders leave officials handling two operations at once. Existing flood relief and recovery work must continue across affected communities. Simultaneously, personnel and machinery must remain available for the approaching weather threat. That creates a direct operational overlap between the previous flooding and the new warning.

Flood relief continues as emergency teams and machinery remain ready for another weather threat

Anutin said agencies had already provided integrated support during the existing emergency. Even so, his latest instructions require those resources to remain available for immediate redeployment. The government is maintaining its emergency command structure. Provincial governors must also remain ready as forecasts and local conditions change.

Friday’s meeting gathered reports directly from agencies operating in affected areas. The DDPM Director-General was tasked with leading the detailed assessment. Agencies had to report local conditions, operational difficulties and requests for further assistance. From there, officials could adjust plans before the next rainfall period.

October 4 and 5 remain the government’s immediate focus. The Meteorological Department expects a high risk of heavy rainfall across many areas. Anutin has therefore ordered preparations before that rainfall arrives. After that, the wider DDPM severe weather alert continues through October 7.

Bangkok again sits directly inside the threatened area. The capital has not completed recovery from the previous flooding. Nevertheless, another period of heavy rainfall is approaching while drainage and relief work continues. Surrounding provinces face the same renewed pressure.

Under the government orders, machinery and emergency supplies must remain ready across the metropolitan area. Officials must also prepare evacuation facilities where required. At the same time, flood-hit communities must continue receiving relief and recovery assistance. Improving conditions cannot trigger a reduction in readiness.

Bangkok remains inside the danger zone as heavy rainfall threatens renewed pressure on flood recovery

Provincial governors have been ordered to coordinate preparations across their areas. Likewise, they must ensure warnings quickly reach vulnerable communities. Local agencies must be prepared to support evacuations and emergency relief. The DDPM has placed particular emphasis on locations exposed to flash flooding and rapid run-off.

Mountainous areas vulnerable to landslides require close monitoring. By contrast, low-lying communities face the danger of accumulated water. Strong winds add another threat as thunderstorms cross the country. Thus, preparations extend beyond river flooding and urban drainage.

The geographic scale is extensive. The warning runs from Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai to Narathiwat in the deep South. It crosses the Northeast, Central Plains, Bangkok, eastern provinces and southern regions. More importantly, it arrives while parts of Thailand remain occupied with the previous flood emergency.

Bangkok faces the clearest overlap. Recovery work continues while officials prepare for another spell of heavy rainfall. In turn, drainage and relief operations must continue without tying up every available emergency resource. Surrounding provinces must maintain similar readiness.

Governors coordinate local warnings as Thailand faces severe weather from the North to the deep South

Anutin said coordinated work had already improved conditions across affected areas. However, he ordered officials to maintain their emergency posture. “We must maintain continuous preparedness in case we need to deal with flooding situations in other provinces,” he said.

The government’s immediate test now begins with the October 4 and 5 rainfall threat. Beyond that, the nationwide warning remains active through October 7. Bangkok and surrounding provinces remain directly inside the threatened area.

Meanwhile, flood recovery operations continue in communities already hit by the previous weather. Machinery, personnel, evacuation centres, food and drinking water must remain ready. Governors must monitor vulnerable areas and maintain emergency response teams.

Thailand therefore enters another severe weather period before the previous flood emergency has fully cleared. This time, the government is ordering preparations before the next heavy rainfall reaches the country.
