In October, Malaysia is experiencing a dynamic period marked by a flourishing sports calendar, economic resilience, and significant international investment prospects.
The country recently hosted top-tier sporting events and saw commendable performances by national athletes at the Asian Games.
Economic highlights include the ringgit's stability and heightened investment activity, particularly in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone and Petronas's involvement in Canada's LNG project.
Meanwhile, political and economic attention turns to the forthcoming Dewan Rakyat sitting and the Melaka State Election, both of which have implications for Malaysia's future trajectory.
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4 — October has got off to a positive start for Malaysia, marked by a vibrant sporting calendar, strong performances by national athletes and encouraging developments in the economy and investment, while several major national agendas await as the month unfolds.
The first weekend of the month saw Malaysia become a focal point for sports fans as the roar of Formula 1 (F1) machinery once again echoed at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) after nine years, with Malaysia hosting the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia 2026.
The return of the prestigious race to Sepang, which last hosted an F1 event in 2017, coincided with two other major international sporting events, the Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) 2026 and the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon (KLSCM) 2026.
The 30th edition of LTdL, which began on Sept 27, will conclude in Putrajaya today after eight stages across the peninsula, while KLSCM, held yesterday and today, saw more than 30,000 local and international participants take to the streets of the capital.
The sporting excitement at home was accompanied by strong performances by the national contingent at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games in Japan, which had secured nine gold, seven silver and 16 bronze medals as of yesterday.
The haul included historic team gold medals for the men’s and women’s squash teams, a keirin gold for track cycling champion Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang, and the men’s sepak takraw squad’s first team regu gold in 36 years.
National sporting success also extended to the football pitch as Harimau Malaya ended their Fifa Asean Cup 2026 group-stage campaign with a 6-0 victory over Singapore.
Although the result was not enough to send the national squad into the final, the team is set to face Vietnam in the third-place playoff tomorrow.
The positive trend was also reflected in the economy, with the ringgit showing resilience in a challenging global environment, ending the first week of October trading at 4.0820/4.0870 against the US dollar.
Malaysia’s investment momentum also received a boost as the country and Singapore explored efforts to attract third-country investors to the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).
Companies from the republic have so far committed more than S$5.5 billion in investments in the zone, covering sectors including advanced manufacturing, data centres, energy technology and solar energy.
On the international front, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia’s involvement was also expanding through Petronas, which holds a 25 per cent stake in the C$33 billion (about RM94.7 billion) LNG Canada Phase 2 expansion project.
The project could open up further investment and business opportunities for Malaysian companies in Canada’s energy and infrastructure sectors.
Following Anwar’s meeting with Bahrain’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Prince Salman Hamad Al Khalifa, yesterday, Malaysia also welcomed Bahraini investments in areas including Islamic finance, technology, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity and smart manufacturing.
The two countries also encouraged Malaysian companies to use Bahrain as a gateway to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) market.
Despite the positive developments at the start of October, Malaysia continues to grapple with transboundary haze, which has caused a decline in air quality in many areas nationwide.
Six areas recorded Air Pollutant Index (API) readings at unhealthy levels, while 37 were at moderate levels and only three recorded good readings.
As October progresses, attention will turn to several major agendas expected to shape the country’s economic and political landscape for the remainder of the year.
Most immediately, focus will be on the Dewan Rakyat sitting, which begins tomorrow, with the tabling of Budget 2027 by the Prime Minister, who is also Finance Minister, scheduled for Friday.
The budget will be among the country’s most closely watched economic agendas this year, with attention expected on measures to tackle the cost of living, raise incomes, stimulate growth and strengthen economic resilience amid a challenging global environment.
The Pre-Budget 2027 Statement had outlined 10 focus areas centred on the Madani Economy and 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) priorities, including tackling the cost of living, increasing incomes, creating quality jobs and strengthening the economy and governance.
Political activity is also expected to intensify this month as the 16th Melaka State Election (PRN) moves into the next phase following the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly on Sept 23.
The Election Commission (EC) will hold a special meeting this Wednesday to determine key dates for the election, including nomination and polling days, as negotiations and cooperation among political parties remain a focal point.
Senior Lecturer in Political Science at the Faculty of Administrative Science and Policy Studies, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Mujibu Abd Muis, described October as a crucial month that could determine the direction and pace of the country’s politics in the final months of 2026.
He said developments taking place almost simultaneously, including the Melaka state election, internal party dynamics and the tabling of Budget 2027, could shape public perceptions ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16).
Mujibu viewed the Melaka state election not merely as a battleground to determine the state government, but as a potential ‘political laboratory’ for parties to test their respective strengths, strategies and cooperation formulas.
He said the election would follow two previous state polls involving Johor and Negeri Sembilan, while also providing political data that could influence seat negotiations, candidate selection and coalition alignments ahead of GE16.
Mujibu said Budget 2027 would serve as the most tangible test of the government’s economic credibility, noting that the public would evaluate it not merely based on figures but on the extent to which announced measures affect their lives, including disposable income, the cost of living, employment and economic opportunities.
“With two months remaining until the end of 2026, October provides an opportunity to assess the political landscape. Parties will look at the Melaka state election results, gauge the public’s response to the Budget, assess their respective organisational strengths and then begin making more serious calculations for GE16.
“In summary, October may not be the month that determines who will win the general election, but it could be the month that determines who starts to emerge as being in the lead, who is losing momentum and who needs to change their strategy,” he said. — Bernama
