The 73-year-old man who was murdered in Telok Blangah on Monday (Oct 5) was a friendly person, a vendor at a coffee shop said.

The vendor at Block 61 Telok Blangah Heights told Shin Min Daily News that the victim frequented the coffee shop and had never caused trouble.

A 32-year-old man will be charged with the elderly man's murder, after calling the police to surrender.

Speaking to Shin Min on Tuesday, a hawker at the Block 61 coffee shop recounted two blood-soaked men running from the direction of Block 56 towards the coffee shop.

A person at the coffee shop immediately called the police.

Members of the public applied pressure over the older man's wound to try stem the heavy bleeding from his chest.

He was helped onto a chair, but he gradually became confused and lost consciousness, an eyewitness told the Chinese publication.

The witness recalled the other man, 53, having a large bloodstain on the left shoulder of his clothes.

The police said the younger man was conscious when taken to hospital.

Doctor Joel Lee from a clinic at Block 61 told The Straits Times that the 53-year-old man had been helped into his clinic at about 6pm.

The injured man told the doctor to help the older stabbing victim, who was at the coffee shop.

"By the time I got there... there was somebody holding his chest, and his hands had already slumped."

Dr Lee said the victim "was just trying to tell me he was in distress".

The elderly man later died in hospital, said police on Monday.

In a statement, the police said they responded to calls for assistance at the vicinity of Block 61 Telok Blangah Heights at about 6pm.

The 73-year-old man was found lying motionless and a 53-year-old man was injured at the ground floor of the block.

Tanjong Pagar MP Rachel Ong said in a Facebook post on Tuesday that she met with the victim's family after the incident.

"They are still trying to come to terms with what has happened and have asked for privacy during this very difficult time. This is tragic beyond words, and our hearts go out to them," she wrote.

Ong also asked the public not to speculate or share unverified information, and to refrain from sharing photographs and any identifying details of the victim to respect his family.

The 32-year-old will be charged on Wednesday. Police investigations are ongoing.
