The successful Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang International Circuit has enhanced Malaysia's global profile.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim highlighted the event's economic opportunities and its appeal to local fans.

The race returned to Sepang after nine years, following agreements involving Malaysian and Bahraini governments.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7 — The successful hosting of the Formula 1 (F1) Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix (GP) at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit (SIC) last Sunday has elevated Malaysia’s international image.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said hosting the prestigious motorsport event allowed local fans to experience the thrill of F1 action on home soil again, while opening vast economic opportunities for local entrepreneurs.

“Special appreciation to Bahrain for the friendship that made this meaningful moment possible. May the close ties between our two nations continue to bloom,” he said in a post accompanying a highlight video of the F1 event on his Facebook page yesterday.

In the video, several local fans expressed gratitude for the chance to watch the world-class race, especially with ticket prices starting as low as RM200.

The Prime Minister also thanked all parties involved in making the race a success, creating special memories for Malaysians and F1 fans worldwide.

In July, F1 confirmed Malaysia as the host for the Gulf Air Bahrain GP from Oct 2 to 4, following an agreement between Formula 1, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), and the governments of Malaysia and Bahrain. It marked the event’s return to SIC after nine years.

The historic hosting followed discussions and the close friendship between His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia and the King of Bahrain, King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. The two governments then cooperated to ensure the race remained on the 2026 F1 calendar after it was cancelled earlier due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia. — Bernama
