Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that the Malaysian government has made significant efforts to engage with Indonesia to address the worsening transboundary haze, countering criticisms of a lack of proactivity.
This response follows former Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin's remarks about Malaysia's seemingly lenient approach and his call for a firmer stance, although he later recognized the importance of diplomatic engagement in his podcast.
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 — The government has done its utmost to engage Indonesia in addressing the worsening transboundary haze, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.
“We have done everything we can,” he briefly told reporters after officiating at the launch of the Universiti Malaya (UM) Residensi Siswa Project here.
Anwar was responding to allegations that the government had not been proactive enough in tackling the transboundary haze issue.
Yesterday, former Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin criticised Malaysia for being “too soft” in its dealings with Indonesia over the haze, calling for a firmer stance.
However, in the latest episode of his Keluar Sekejap podcast, Khairy acknowledged the need for diplomatic engagement to resolve the issue. — Berrnama
