Stranger enters BTO flat undergoing renovation twice in a week, surprising homeowners

A homeowner recently took to social media to share about a stranger who entered their BTO flat twice in a week while it was undergoing renovation.

On Thursday (Oct 29), Instagram user Navigatethirty posted CCTV footage of the two incidents that took place at an undisclosed location.

The first video shows a man exploring the unit and appearing to take photos.

The homeowner, who wished to remain anonymous, told Stomp that the first incident happened in late July during installation works for air-conditioning in the flat.

The contractors had left the main door open while they worked in the bedrooms as they needed access to the piping placed outside the unit.

Before leaving the flat, the stranger appeared to notice the CCTV camera, the homeowner said.

Five days later, the man returned to the flat with a woman.

They "tailgated" Building Service Centre workers to enter the unit, the homeowner wrote.

In the video, the homeowner said he confronted the pair through the CCTV system, asking why the man had returned.

The homeowner told Stomp that the audio recording was unclear, adding that he only heard the man saying saying he had "only been inside for a few minutes".

The woman was also seen heading towards another room.

While there were no valuables in the flat, Navigatethirty wrote: "The craziest part? It happened just one day after we installed our keypad lock and CCTV! Thankfully, nothing was stolen."

According to the homeowner, the pair have not returned to the flat since the second incident.

"We thought trespassing wouldn't happen to us...until it happened to us twice in a single week," he said.

The homeowners told Stomp that they were willing to overlook the first incident as they understood that people might be curious.

Nevertheless, they were "considerably more concerned, particularly about the privacy and security" of their home when the man returned.

"It made us realise that it would be worthwhile to raise awareness that, regardless of the circumstances or intention, entering another person's home without permission is not something that should be encouraged," they said.

Noting that it was important to have "mutual respect for boundaries" even while maintaining good relationships with neighbours, they urged fellow homeowners to look into security measures during renovations.

Their video, which has since amassed 203,000 views on Instagram, follows a string of trespassing incidents while flat are undergoing renovations.

AsiaOne has reached out to Navigatethirty for more information.

A property agent shared about a similar incident online in September where several people were seen entering a Woodlands HDB flat undergoing renovation on two separate occasions.

The agent questioned whether this phenomenon, which was equivalent to trespassing, had become "a norm".

In a separate incident, Class 95 radio producer Lee Yoo Jin shared a video she was trying to film at home when a stranger attempted to enter.

She chided the man, telling him that "it's not right" to enter homes that are still under renovation.

"Do you go around opening people's homes like that?" she questioned.
