GEORGE TOWN, Sept 16 — Air quality at all four monitoring stations in Penang reached unhealthy levels as of 11am today, with Minden recording the highest Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 167.

State Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo said Balik Pulau recorded an API reading of 164, followed by Seberang Jaya at 162 and Seberang Perai at 160.

He said Minden and Balik Pulau had registered unhealthy readings over the past 24 hours, while readings in Seberang Jaya and Seberang Perai had risen from moderate to unhealthy levels.

“The state government advises the public not to panic but, at the same time, to take precautions, particularly in areas where API readings have reached unhealthy levels,” he said in a statement today.

He advised those with respiratory health problems, children, senior citizens and pregnant women to reduce strenuous or prolonged physical activity outdoors.

“Those experiencing coughing, breathing difficulties, chest discomfort, sore throat or eye irritation should limit their exposure to outdoor air and seek medical advice or treatment if the symptoms persist or worsen,” he said.

Sundarajoo said healthy individuals could continue their daily activities while taking local conditions and the latest API readings into account.

The public was also encouraged to reduce unnecessary outdoor activities should API readings continue to rise.

He said the state government and relevant agencies would continue monitoring air quality and remain in contact with the Department of Environment (DoE) for updated information and assessments.

“The department will step up surveillance of open burning and fires that could contribute to deteriorating air quality, with action to be taken under existing laws where necessary,” he said.

Sundarajoo said industries, particularly those operating in densely populated areas, must cooperate by reducing emissions from major sources.

He reminded the public to avoid activities that contribute to air pollution, including open burning, and to immediately report such incidents to the relevant authorities.

Sundarajoo said the state government would provide updates based on information and assessments from the authorities.

“州政府建议公众不要恐慌，但同时也要采取预防措施，尤其是在API读数达到不健康水平的地区，”他在今天的一份声明中说。

他建议有呼吸系统疾病的人、儿童、老年人和孕妇减少在户外进行剧烈或长时间的体育活动。

他说：“出现咳嗽、呼吸困难、胸部不适、喉咙痛或眼睛发炎等症状的人应限制接触室外空气，如果症状持续或恶化，应寻求医疗建议或治疗。”

Sundarajoo表示，健康人群可以继续进行日常活动，但需考虑当地情况和最新的API读数。

如果空气污染指数（API）读数继续上升，也鼓励公众减少不必要的户外活动。

他表示，州政府和相关机构将继续监测空气质量，并与环境部保持联系，以获取最新信息和评估。

“该部门将加强对可能导致空气质量恶化的露天焚烧和火灾的监管，并在必要时根据现有法律采取行动，”他说。
