A driver has earned praise online for bringing an elderly man to safety after spotting him walking along the first lane of the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE).
Dashcam footage of the incident was uploaded to the Roads.sg Instagram page on Wednesday (Sep 2) and had garnered over 50,000 views as at Thursday afternoon.
In the video, the driver said he was travelling along the AYE when he noticed an elderly man walking near the road divider beside the first lane of the expressway.
The man was seen using an umbrella as a walking stick as he slowly made his way against the flow of traffic.
"I was worried and thought I should U-turn and see if he needs help," the driver wrote, adding that vehicles in the first lane were travelling at around 90kmh.
The driver then turned back and encountered the elderly man again.
By then, the man was on the opposite side of the expressway, indicating that he had crossed the road divider at some point.
The driver slowed to a stop and offered the elderly man a ride, which he accepted.
The video showed the elderly man smiling as he hurried towards the passenger-side door and got into the vehicle.
"I asked the uncle why he was on the highway and told him it was really dangerous," the driver said. "He sounded like he was lost and wanted me to bring him to the nearest bus stop."
Bringing him to a nearby bus stop, the driver parted ways with the elderly man who hurriedly flagged down bus service 198, which travels to Bukit Merah Interchange.
However, the driver later expressed regret over that decision.
"After that I called the police and realised I shouldn't have dropped him off because he might be senile," the driver said.
"[Serious] regrets, but hopefully our police can find him and make sure he's okay."
The driver also acknowledged that motorists are generally prohibited from stopping on expressways, adding that he had explained the circumstances to the police.

While some users online chided the driver for potentially endangering others by stopping on the first lane of the expressway, many others felt he had done the right thing by helping the elderly man.
"Thanks for helping. Waiting for official help to arrive might be too late," commented one.
"Thank you for your quick thinking and action," another said, adding that AYE is a very busy expressway. "You might have saved a life!"
