Even unfrozen assets won’t immediately cover Najib’s RM50m house-arrest fine, says son

The family of former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, whose assets are frozen, is currently unable to gather the RM50 million needed for him to serve his remaining sentence under house arrest, as stated by his eldest son, Datuk Mohd Nizar Najib.

While fundraising efforts by Umno and voluntary contributions reflect public support, they still fall short of the required amount.

Najib's lawyer also highlighted that his bank accounts are frozen and he lacks the personal funds to cover the fine.

Najib, previously sentenced to 12 years, received a conditional pardon reducing his sentence to house arrest contingent on the fine's payment.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 — Even if former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s frozen assets were released, his family would still be unable to immediately raise the RM50 million fine required for him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest, his eldest son has said.

Datuk Mohd Nizar Najib said the family was still working to raise the money, with Najib’s ability to pay depending partly on how much could be collected through contributions, Malaysiakini reported today.

“If his assets were not frozen, that might help somewhat in raising the money. But the reality is that we still have much to do before we reach that amount,” Nizar was quoted as saying.

“Whether my father can afford to pay it depends on how much is collected. The stipulated amount must be paid before he can obtain a house arrest order, and that is what we are working towards.”

Nizar, the Peramu Jaya assemblyman, was speaking at a Pekan Umno press conference in Pahang last night.

His remarks come a day after Najib’s lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah said the former prime minister did not have enough personal funds to pay the RM50 million and was uncomfortable with members of the public raising the money for him.

Shafee also said Najib’s bank accounts had been frozen.

Najib, 73, is serving a prison sentence in the SRC International case. His original 12-year term and RM210 million fine were previously reduced to six years and RM50 million.

On September 18, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, granted Najib a conditional pardon, following a meeting of the Federal Territories Pardons Board, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, provided he pays the RM50 million fine.

Nizar also defended Umno’s fundraising campaign for his father.

“Some people don’t like it, but whatever the circumstances, we should be grateful.

“It turns out that many Malaysians still care for my father and feel moved to help,” he said.

He said Umno had launched the campaign on its own initiative and that the family had not requested it, adding that contributors came from different backgrounds.

Pekan Umno chief Fakhruddin Ariff said the division had so far raised more than RM26,000 for Najib.

“This amount was raised in less than a week, and I am confident it will grow over time,” he said.

就在纳吉布的律师丹斯里穆罕默德·沙菲·阿卜杜拉表示这位前首相没有足够的个人资金支付5000万令吉，并且对公众为他筹款感到不自在的第二天，纳吉布发表了上述言论。

沙菲还表示，纳吉布的银行账户已被冻结。

现年73岁的纳吉因SRC国际公司案正在服刑。他最初被判处12年监禁和2.1亿令吉罚款，后减刑至6年监禁和5000万令吉。

9月18日，马来西亚最高元首苏丹易卜拉欣陛下在联邦直辖区赦免委员会会议后，有条件地赦免了纳吉布，允许他居家监禁至2028年8月23日，前提是他支付5000万令吉的罚款。

尼扎尔还为巫统为其父亲发起的筹款活动辩护。

“有些人不喜欢这样，但无论情况如何，我们都应该心存感激。”

他说：“事实证明，很多马来西亚人仍然关心我的父亲，并深受感动想要提供帮助。”

他说，巫统主动发起了这项活动，并非该家庭的要求，并补充说，捐款者来自不同的背景。

北根巫统主席法赫鲁丁阿里夫表示，该部门迄今为止已为纳吉筹集了超过2万6000令吉。

“这笔款项是在不到一周的时间内筹集到的，我相信随着时间的推移，金额还会增长，”他说。
