Malaysia to ship out 578 more e-waste containers as border agency targets full clearance by end 2026

The Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) has successfully re-exported 436 containers of electronic waste this year, with an additional 578 containers set for re-export by October as part of a broader goal to return 1,259 containers by 2026.

The agency, in collaboration with various national bodies, recorded RM265.89 million in seizures primarily from the interception of e-waste and drugs, marking a substantial increase from previous years.

Under the direction of Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, enhanced security measures, particularly at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, have significantly curbed drug smuggling attempts.

Additionally, 408 new AKPS officers are set to begin field training, with recruitment efforts ongoing to fill 13,721 positions at entry points nationwide.

SEGAMAT, Sept 27 — The Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) has re-exported 436 containers of electronic waste (e-waste) to their countries of origin this year, with another 578 containers due to be sent out from October.

The agency said the operations were carried out in collaboration with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Royal Malaysia Police, Department of Environment, and port authorities.

“Another 578 containers are scheduled to be sent out in stages beginning this October,” it said in a statement today.

AKPS is targeting the re-export of all 1,259 e-waste containers from Malaysia by the end of 2026.

Meanwhile, AKPS director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the agency had recorded seizures worth RM265.89 million this year, about three times the value recorded in 2025.

He said e-waste and drugs were among the main contributors to the total value of seizures and leakages intercepted by the agency.

He was speaking at a press conference after the closing ceremony of the AKPS Basic Training Course for Pioneer Officers Series 1/2026, which was also attended by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar at the Segamat Police Training Centre here today.

On drug smuggling trends, Mohd Shuhaily said tighter controls and targeted screening at Kuala Lumpur International Airport had helped curb repeated attempts to smuggle drugs.

“Enforcement at KLIA Terminals 1 and 2 sees almost daily arrests involving attempts to smuggle cannabis flowers, mostly masterminded by foreigners,” he said.

The 408 pioneer AKPS officers who completed their training comprise 39 Grade KS5 Assistant Border Superintendents and 369 Grade KS1 Assistant Border Superintendents, and will begin field training at the Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS Link entry point from Oct 1.

On plans to fill 13,721 AKPS positions at 122 entry points nationwide, Mohd Shuhaily said recruitment was being carried out in stages through service scheme offers to personnel from six core agencies.

He said AKPS was prepared to open applications to other groups if the first two recruitment phases failed to achieve a reasonable staffing level. — Bernama

关于毒品走私趋势，莫哈末·舒海利表示，吉隆坡国际机场加强管控和有针对性的筛查有助于遏制毒品走私的屡次企图。

他说：“吉隆坡国际机场1号和2号航站楼的执法行动几乎每天都会逮捕试图走私大麻花的嫌疑人，其中大部分是由外国人策划的。”

完成培训的 408 名首批 AKPS 官员包括 39 名 KS5 级助理边境督察和 369 名 KS1 级助理边境督察，并将于 10 月 1 日起在柔佛新山-新加坡 RTS 连接入口处开始实地训练。

关于在全国 122 个入职点填补 13,721 个 AKPS 职位的计划，Mohd Shuhaily 表示，招聘工作正在分阶段进行，通过向六个核心机构的人员提供服务计划的方式进行。

他表示，如果前两轮招聘未能达到合理的人员配备水平，AKPS准备向其他团体开放申请。——马新社
