BMW catches fire at Geylang Bahru hawker centre carpark; cleaners grab 11 extinguishers to help

Two hawker centre cleaners reportedly rushed to put out a BMW fire at the Geylang Bahru Market and Food Centre carpark on Saturday (Sept 26).

One of the cleaners, 38, told Shin Min Daily News that he was collecting used bowls and plates when he noticed smoke coming from the carpark.

After realising that a car had caught fire, he and a colleague grabbed 11 fire extinguishers from the hawker centre's fire equipment cabinet and ran to the scene, Shin Min reported.

Several members of the public also stepped in to help put out the blaze.

"It was a simple job, and something I ought to do," the cleaner told Shin Min, adding that he was grateful to the passers-by who helped.

In response to AsiaOne's query, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to a fire at 69 Geylang Bahru at about 3.55pm.

The fire involved the engine compartment of a vehicle, and SCDF officers extinguished it using a water jet and hose reel.

There were no reported injuries, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The BMW owner, 34, told Shin Min that the car began emitting smoke less than a minute after he got out to have a meal at the hawker centre.

He said he saw flames coming from the engine compartment and quickly moved away before calling SCDF, adding that he had owned the car for five years and had not experienced any problems with it before the incident.

据报道，周六（9月26日），两名小贩中心清洁工冲进芽笼峇鲁巴刹与熟食中心停车场扑灭了一辆宝马车的火灾。

其中一名38岁的清洁工告诉《新明日报》，他当时正在收集用过的碗碟，突然注意到停车场冒出了烟。

据《新明日报》报道，他发现一辆汽车着火后，与一名同事从小贩中心的消防器材柜中取出 11 个灭火器，跑到现场。

一些路人也加入进来帮忙灭火。

“这是一份简单的工作，也是我应该做的，”这位清洁工告诉《新明日报》，并表示感谢帮助他的路人。

针对 AsiaOne 的询问，新加坡民防部队 (SCDF) 表示，他们于下午 3 点 55 分左右接到报警，称芽笼峇鲁 69 号发生火灾。

火灾涉及车辆的发动机舱，新加坡民防部队人员使用高压水枪和水带将其扑灭。

目前尚未收到人员伤亡报告，火灾原因正在调查中。

这位34岁的宝马车主告诉《新明日报》，他下车到小贩中心吃饭不到一分钟，车子就开始冒烟。

他说他看到发动机舱冒出火焰，便迅速离开并拨打了新加坡民防部队的电话。他还补充说，他拥有这辆车五年了，在事故发生前从未出现过任何问题。
