PSI in western Singapore hits 102, joins central region in having unhealthy air

Air quality in the central region has stayed in the unhealthy region for over a day.

SINGAPORE – The air quality in the west of Singapore stood at 102 on the PSI on the morning of Sept 5, making it the third region in the country to record unhealthy levels of pollutants since Sept 4 .

At 7am , the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) stood at 119 in the Central region, with the reading for the East dipping to 99 and West at 102 .

The reading for the North (85) and South (88) remained in the moderate range.

Air quality is considered unhealthy when the PSI is in the range of 101 to 200, during which the National Environment Agency (NEA) advises the public to cut down on outdoor activities.

The West crossed the 101 threshold at approximately midnight, checks by The Straits Times showed.

The PSI for the East had moved into the unhealthy level at about 9pm on Sept 4 where it had remaine d before dipping at 7am on Sept 5.

The Sept 5 PSI reading means the Central region of Singapore has now had unhealthy levels of pollutants in the air for over a day.

The last time the PSI hit unhealthy levels due to haze was in October 2023.

In a Sept 4 advisory, the NEA said the haze could persist till Sept 5 , with air quality forecast to be between the higher end of the moderate and the middle of the unhealthy range.

The agency said smoke plumes from fires in the southern and central parts of Sumatra and various parts of Kalimantan were observed to be drifting towards Singapore.

As dry conditions are forecast for the coming days, Singapore may continue to be affected by transboundary haze if the wind direction remains unchanged as the fires persist.

新加坡——9月5日上午，新加坡西部地区的空气质量指数（PSI）为102，成为自9月4日以来该国第三个空气污染水平达到不健康标准的地区。

早上 7 点，中部地区的 24 小时污染物标准指数 (PSI) 为 119，东部地区的读数降至 99，西部地区的读数降至 102。

北部（85）和南部（88）的读数均处于中等水平。

当空气污染指数（PSI）在 101 至 200 之间时，空气质量被认为是不健康的。在此期间，国家环境局（NEA）建议公众减少户外活动。

《海峡时报》的调查显示，西方国家气温在午夜前后突破了101摄氏度大关。

9 月 4 日晚上 9 点左右，东部地区的 PSI 指数已升至不健康水平，并一直维持在该水平，直到 9 月 5 日早上 7 点才有所下降。

上一次因雾霾导致空气污染指数（PSI）达到不健康水平是在 2023 年 10 月。

9 月 4 日，国家环境局发布公告称，雾霾可能会持续到 9 月 5 日，预计空气质量将处于中等偏上和不健康范围的中段之间。

该机构表示，苏门答腊岛南部和中部以及加里曼丹岛各地火灾产生的烟雾正向新加坡飘去。

由于预计未来几天天气干燥，如果火势持续蔓延且风向保持不变，新加坡可能会继续受到跨境烟霾的影响。
