TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a 54-year-old man for allegedly striking an elderly woman in the head with a hammer-like object and robbing her in Edogawa Ward, reports Nippon News Network (Oct. 1).

Kazuya Mukaizato is accused of attacking the woman, who is in her 70s, on a street in August. After allegedly dealing the blow, he made off with her bag containing her wallet and smartphone, according to police.

Upon his arrest, the suspect offered a mixed confession. While he admitted to the motive, telling police, “I ran out of living expenses and was at a loss,” he also claimed, “I don’t really remember much about it.”

The brutal attack left the victim with a fractured skull, an injury expected to take two months to heal. Bizarrely, the woman had no memory of the assault itself. After returning home and complaining of a severe headache to her family, a hospital visit revealed the skull fracture, prompting them to contact the police.

Investigators eventually identified Mukaizato through an analysis of security camera footage in the area.
