A domestic helper hired to care for a single mum's son has become much more than a caregiver, standing by her employer through some of the lowest points in her life.
In a TikTok video shared by The Gentle Mile on Sunday (Oct 18), the mother paid tribute to her domestic helper from Philippines, Auntie Evelyn, who has been with her family since 2022.
"When I was at my lowest, Auntie Evelyn saw everything. The tears, the struggles, the days I could barely hold myself together," she wrote in the video caption.
The mother said Evelyn was initially hired to help care for her son when her maternity leave ended and she returned to work.
However, the helper's role extended beyond looking after the child, whom the mother described as "a little different".
She added that Evelyn had always understood her son and never made him "feel any less loved" for who he was.
The mother also recalled a particularly difficult period when she was exhausted and emotionally drained after an argument with her ex-partner.
She eventually collapsed on the kitchen floor, and Evelyn was there to pick her up.
"There were times I literally wanted to give up on myself," she shared, adding that Evelyn would encourage her to get back on her feet for her son.
Standing by her through difficult times
The mother later found it increasingly unbearable to continue living under the same roof as her ex-partner.
As she was not from Singapore and had nowhere else to go at such short notice, a friend offered her a small room where the three of them could stay together.
Despite the uncertain circumstances, Evelyn remained by their side.
"Wherever you and your son go, I go," the helper told her.
The mother said the three of them shared one bed, and they continued to navigate the difficult period together.
Reflecting on Evelyn's unwavering support, the mother acknowledged that she was not a wealthy employer, describing herself as "just an ordinary working mum" trying to rebuild her life.
Now that she is gradually getting back on her feet, she hopes to return some of the kindness Evelyn has shown her family.
In the video, she shared that she had bought a laptop for Evelyn's daughter, hoping it would help her pursue her dreams.
The mother added that Evelyn had been through so much alongside her and had never walked away, even when she was at her lowest.
"Some people are family by blood. Some become family by staying through the hardest days," she wrote.
"You're family to me, Evelyn."
The heartwarming story also touched many netizens, with some sharing that the mother's tribute had brought them to tears.
One commenter called Evelyn "an angel sent from heaven", adding: "We all need and have auntie Evelyn in our life."
Another netizen, said Evelyn's loyalty reflected the kindness the mother had shown her.
