Anwar says meeting with Tamil Nadu CM Vijay remains on the cards, either in Putrajaya or Chennai

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim plans to meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in either Putrajaya or Chennai, dismissing concerns over unreciprocated visits.

Anwar praised Vijay's momentum and appeal among young voters, highlighting his focus on reform and addressing poverty and corruption issues.

Anwar emphasised Vijay's learning openness, sharing insights from his book and discussed Vijay's cultural influence and potential to enhance Malaysia's ties with Tamil Nadu.

NEW DELHI, Sept 14 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the plan for a bilateral meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister remains on the card and that it can take place either in Putrajaya or Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

In an exclusive interview with Thanthi TV, he also dismissed speculations that Chennai did not reciprocate a proposed Malaysia visit leg.

The Prime Minister who is currently in India, was supposed to make a working visit to Chennai first after attending the 18th BRICS Leaders Summit here before heading to Keralam, another state in South India.

However, Chennai was dropped at the eleventh hour.

“It is not true (that Chennai did not reciprocate). From the beginning the Chief Minister’s office said they are trying to adjust his schedule as he had prior commitment and I only a very small window between New Delhi, Keralam and Maldives visit.”

“Even then, he tried to accommodate, and he had a major investment mission and other programmes planned. So, finally I said to him. I will continue to Keralam and Maldives and that I can’t proceed with the Tamil Nadu visit,” Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister explained.

Hence, the fact is both sides tried to align calendars amid prior commitments and that goodwill remains strong, he said.

In a wide-ranging conversation, the Prime Minister offered a candid appraisal of Vijay, praising his early momentum and appeal among young voters while urging a long-view approach to power anchored in values, patience and practical wisdom.

It is to be noted that Anwar, who was among the first foreign leaders to congratulate Vijay, and described him as a “new voice of reason, of principles and of good governance.”

“When I spoke to him (Vijay) I always told him that the challenge when you are here in power, is to sustain the wisdom to navigate because in the real world the battles will be different from what you aim to do,” he said.

Anwar said he was also deeply touched with Vijay’s approach, especially the zeal for reforms, clean up as well as to address poverty and corruption issue.

Prime Minister said he also shared with the Chief Minister that it is not an easy mission as sustaining good governance requires navigating complex pressures without losing sight of core principles.

Anwar also revealed that he had shared his book with the Tamil Nadu leader after a substantive conversation, noting Vijay’s openness to learning.

“He listens,” Anwar said, calling it a promising trait in a climate where quick applause often overshadows reflection.

In the interview, the Prime Minister also underscored the civilizational weight of Tamil Nadu, from the Tirukkural’s moral clarity to cinema’s power to educate and argued that Vijay’s cultural influence carries diplomatic potential.

For Malaysia, where the majority of ethnic Indians are Tamils, Vijay’s popularity is more than celebrity and it is an opportunity to deepen people-to-people ties. — Bernama

“即便如此，他还是尽力配合，而且他当时已经安排了一项重要的投资访问和其他项目。所以，最后我告诉他，我将继续访问喀拉拉邦和马尔代夫，无法继续进行泰米尔纳德邦之行，”同时也是财政部长的安瓦尔解释道。

因此，双方都努力在既定承诺的基础上协调日程安排，而且双方的善意依然牢固，他说道。

在一次内容广泛的谈话中，总理坦率地评价了维杰，赞扬了他早期的发展势头和在年轻选民中的吸引力，同时敦促他采取以价值观、耐心和务实智慧为基础的长远执政方式。

值得注意的是，安瓦尔是最早向维杰表示祝贺的外国领导人之一，他称维杰是“理性、原则和良好治理的新声音”。

“我跟他（维杰）谈话时，总是告诉他，身居高位的挑战在于保持智慧去驾驭局势，因为现实世界中的战斗会与你想要做的事情有所不同，”他说。

安瓦尔表示，他也深受维杰的理念所感动，尤其是他对改革、整顿以及解决贫困和腐败问题的热情。

总理表示，他也向首席部长指出，维持良好的治理并非易事，因为要应对各种复杂的压力，同时又不偏离核心原则。

安瓦尔还透露，在一次实质性的谈话后，他与这位泰米尔纳德邦领导人分享了自己的书，并注意到维杰乐于学习。
