Najib gets conditional pardon, to serve remainder of sentence under house arrest

Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has been granted a conditional royal pardon, allowing him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest.

This decision was finalized during the Pardons Board meeting for the Federal Territories, with approval from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia.

Najib is required to pay a RM50 million fine and adhere strictly to the statutory terms, failing which the pardon will be revoked.

Initially sentenced in 2020 for the SRC International corruption case, Najib's sentence was later reduced from 12 to six years, with a previous fine reduced from RM210 million to RM50 million.

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 18 —Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has been granted a conditional royal pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest, the Legal Affairs Division announced today.

The division under the Prime Minister's Department said the decision was finalized during the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya, which convened this morning.

“His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia has consented to grant a conditional pardon to Datuk Swri Najib Razak, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until 23 August 2028, subject to his payment of a fine of RM50 million,” the statement said.

The secretariat noted that Najib must strictly comply with all statutory terms attached to the royal pardon. Should he breach any of the stipulated terms, the conditional pardon will be automatically revoked, and he will be immediately returned to prison to serve the remainder of his sentence.

Najib was convicted in 2020 in the SRC International corruption case, one of several major trials linked to the 1MDB scandal. He began serving his initial 12-year prison sentence at Kajang Prison in August 2022 after the Federal Court dismissed his final appeal.

His prison term was subsequently halved to six years and his original RM210 million fine reduced to RM50 million following an earlier review by the Federal Territories Pardons Board in early 2024.

The division did not disclose further specific conditions attached to the house arrest order.

纳吉布于2020年因SRC国际公司贪污案被判有罪，该案是与1MDB丑闻相关的几起重大案件之一。联邦法院驳回其最终上诉后，他于2022年8月开始在加影监狱服刑，刑期为12年。

2024年初，联邦直辖区赦免委员会进行了一次复核，之后他的刑期减半至六年，原先的2.1亿令吉罚款减至5000万令吉。

该部门没有透露居家监禁令的更多具体附加条件。
