Road closures, diversions in Kuching from Sept 28 for TYT’s 80th birthday events

Roads in Kuching will be closed or diverted from September 28 to October 10 for Tun Pehin Sri Wan Junaidi's 80th birthday celebrations.

Rehearsals from October 5-7 and a full rehearsal on October 8 will affect several key roads.

The event on October 10, including 'Konsert Rakyat', will also cause road closures, with police advising attendees to plan ahead to avoid congestion.

KUCHING, Sept 26 — Several roads here will be closed or diverted starting September 28 to facilitate preparations for the staging of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar’s 80th official birthday celebrations.

Kuching district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the parade and grand assembly in conjunction with the celebration would be held on October 10 at Padang Merdeka.

“Jalan McDougall will be diverted or closed from September 28 at 10am until October 10 at 12am to facilitate in the installation and removal of event tents.

“Rehearsals for the parade and grand assembly will take place from October 5 to 7, between 7am and 11am, affecting Jalan McDougall, Jalan Lampu Isyarat RTM (with access to Padang Merdeka), Jalan Wawasan to Padang Merdeka, and Jalan Tun Abang Hj Openg (Carpenter Street).

“The full rehearsal is scheduled for October 8, from 7am to 11am, and will involve closures along several routes, including Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg (RTM junction) heading towards Padang Merdeka, Jalan McDougall to Padang Merdeka, Jalan Wawasan to Padang Merdeka, Jalan Main Bazaar to Lebuh Temple, Lebuh Wayang to Jalan Main Bazaar and Jalan Gambier heading towards Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg.

“The event proper on October 10 will take place on the aforementioned roads from 7am to 12pm – while ‘Konsert Rakyat’ will also take place on October 10 from 7pm to 12am,” he said in a statement.

Alexson advised visitors attending the event not to park their vehicles along the roadsides, plan their journeys ahead and use alternative routes to reduce traffic congestion.
