During floods in September 2024, Polish Black Hawk® helicopters flew equipment and personnel into the affected region and evacuated over 100 people. In July, production began in Mielec on Europe’s first S-70 Firehawk helicopters that will go to the Czech Republic. Twelve European countries now operate some version of the Black Hawk for mission sets as diverse as the nations who fly them.
In a time of geopolitical tension along NATO’s eastern flank, an armed kit can now turn trusty Black Hawk helicopters into attack Hawks – in a matter of hours and at a fraction of the cost of a dedicated attack helicopter.
Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company, is offering modular kits with both close support and precision strike configurations that convert a UH-60M or S-70i Black Hawk helicopter from a utility aircraft into an armed one, then back again when the mission changes.
The kits support two to six weapons stations and do not reduce the aircraft’s passenger or cargo capacity. The Armed Black Hawk delivers the full medium-category mission set in a single, combat-proven airframe – airmobile assault, close support, medical evacuation, ISR, and tactical lift – maximizing operational flexibility while eliminating the need for separate fleet types and taking advantage of a worldwide sustainment network
“Having a single aircraft that can seamlessly transition from high-intensity strike to humanitarian rescue gives any nation a decisive operational edge while dramatically cutting lifecycle costs,” said Ken Demaree, Sikorsky’s Army and Air Force Systems vice president. “The Black Hawk helicopter proves yet again that it is the world’s most versatile helicopter.”
The armed Black Hawk kits are designed to interface with a broader set of Black Hawk helicopter upgrades already underway with the U.S. Army, including an improved turbine engine, larger fuel tanks, autonomy options and expanded payload capability. The goal, Demaree said, is a platform that can absorb next-generation sensors, weapons and autonomous flight control packages without major structural changes.
“The Black Hawk helicopter will fill mission gaps for the next half century, no matter the theater of operations,” Demaree said. “As we modernize the airframe, we are future-proofing a platform that can adapt to emerging threats and requirements.”
The economics of a shared fleet
A dedicated attack helicopter fleet requires specially trained pilots and mechanics, on top of a separate supply chain, layered onto a service that may already be stretched thin. Sikorsky’s answer is a cost-effective kit that arms the helicopter operators already fly.
The kits are available as an option on new aircraft and as a retrofit to UH-60 and S-70 fleets already in service. Because the armed and unarmed configurations share 95 percent of common parts, crews train on one cockpit layout and maintainers service one fleet instead of two. For a budget-conscious air arm, that adds up to fewer training pipelines and spare-parts inventories, and a lower total-ownership cost spread across a single aircraft doing both utility and attack work.
Armed Black Hawk at a glance:
Close Support Mission Kit: Post penetration fire support against light armor and dismounted troops – perfect for rapid reaction assault and close support.
Precision Strike Mission Kit: Penetration attacks on hardened targets, air defense suppression, and precision strike for high-value objectives
Reconfiguration time: Fewer than three hours to convert to attack configuration; minutes to remove, using tool-free latching hardware
Even with the wing installed and a weapons load aboard, the aircraft still carries 11 fully equipped troops or 3,000 pounds of internal cargo.
Mount points: Two to six available configurations
Compatible weapons: 7.62mm machine guns, .50-cal GP 19 guns, M261 rocket pods, HELLFIRE II, JAGM, APKWS and Spike NLOS missiles, plus a Modular Effects Launcher for other air-launched effects
All of which can be added to the workhorse helicopter the world trusts, with a proven service record of 15 million flight hours, crash-worthy airframe and redundant systems.
“The Armed Black Hawk transforms the Black Hawk from a pure utility platform into a multi-role strike asset,” Demaree said.
Built in Poland, flown across the continent
NATO members agreed at The Hague in June 2025 to reach 5 percent of gross domestic product on defense and security spending by 2035, signaling a mandate to prioritize their security as Ukraine defends itself against Russia. Much of that commitment covers sustaining and modernizing equipment already in service.
A share of that equipment is already European built. PZL Mielec, a Lockheed Martin company and one of Poland’s largest aircraft manufacturers, has produced Black Hawk helicopters since 2010 for 18 customers in 11 countries. Sikorsky named Czech firm Česká letecká servisní a certified European Union distribution center for Black Hawk parts, and the Czech Firehawk aircraft now in production are being built in partnership with that company. Romania acquired its S-70 fleet through an EU-funded program and received an additional aircraft in December 2025 under rescEU, the bloc’s shared emergency reserve, which can be dispatched to other member states at the European Union’s request.
The result is that an armed Black Hawk arrives into infrastructure that already exists, with an airframe built in Poland, sustained through distributors in Poland and the Czech Republic, and already flown by European nations.
“Every helicopter that leaves Mielec goes to work: floods, fires, medical transport, border patrol. Our operators know this aircraft because they have flown it in the worst conditions their countries have faced. The armed configuration is the same helicopter, made in Europe, with one more mission added to its arsenal.” -Janusz Zakrecki, PZL Mielec president and general director.
