Weak 3.3-magnitude earthquake strikes Sabah’s Kuamut, no tsunami threat

On September 26, a minor earthquake of 3.3 magnitude occurred in the Kuamut area of Kinabatangan, Sabah.

According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department, the earthquake's epicentre was located 34km south-west of Tongod at a depth of 118km.

The quake poses no tsunami threat, as Sabah frequently experiences low-magnitude earthquakes due to its proximity to active seismic zones, with most tremors causing no substantial damage.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 — A weak earthquake measuring 3.3 in magnitude was detected in the Kuamut area of Kinabatangan, Sabah, at 5.32am today.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the earthquake was centred at 5.1 degrees north and 116.8 degrees east, at a depth of 118km.

Its epicentre was about 34km south-west of Tongod, Sabah.

MetMalaysia said the earthquake posed no tsunami threat to Malaysia.

Sabah experiences relatively frequent low-magnitude earthquakes because of its proximity to active seismic zones in the region.

Most recorded tremors are minor and do not cause serious damage.
